Concrete is one of the most important resources. This holds especially true for a developing nation like ours where continuously new buildings are being erected. The strength of concrete however has been a concern. The huge investment that erection of buildings demands can only be justified by the longevity of the structure. The longevity of the structure depends on concrete amidst some other factors. Therefore efforts to make concrete stronger has always been underway.

Silica based concrete additives are often used for the purpose of strengthening. They are primarily silica fumes. Silica fumes are formed as a by-product to the production of silicon and ferrosilicon alloys. These silica fumes are induced into the concrete to increase the overall strength of the concrete. Due to the physical and chemical properties of the silica fumes, they are considered excellent pozzolan. The high SiO2 content, large surface area and the fine texture of the particles are primarily responsible for making concrete containing silica fumes a reactive pozzolan.

When concrete is mixed with silica fumes, they exhibit great strength and durability. The concrete contractors have silica based concrete additive, silica fumes, ready with them. When specified they simply add the fumes to concrete.  Handling these fumes require special care from the part of the contractor.

One of the main reasons for the deterioration of concrete quality over the years is considered to be corrosion. This corrosion of concrete takes place primarily owing to the marine salts. Concrete induced with silica usually have a very low water content and hence are resistant to corrosion that is brought about by the penetration of chloride ions. Thus, silica increases the durability and longevity of the concrete structures that would otherwise be corroded at a rapid rate.

More and more constructions are taking place using Silica Fumes for Concrete strengthening, greater durability and water resistance. Even the old existing structures have their rehabilitation done using silica fume induced concrete.

Obtaining Silica Fumes For Varied Purposes

Both Silicon and Silicon Alloys are produced in furnaces operated by electricity. Quartz, woodchips and coal serve as raw material for silicon production. During production of silicon, the smoke that is produced, is stored and kept carefully instead of being discarded and used as landfills. The smoke that is thus collected is known as silica fumes. Silica fumes are primarily employed to strengthen concrete and provide greater durability.

Guidelines of mixing Concrete and Silica Fumes

It is a common practice to add silica fumes to the concrete during the production process of the concrete. Silica fumes maybe in a dry or wet state that is to be mixed with the concrete. Ready assistance can be availed easily, regarding the handling of silica fumes and in production of consistent and high-quality concrete.

Over a long period of time, 6000psi was the benchmark for strong concrete. This benchmark was successfully pushed when Silica fumes were used for concrete strengthening. The new standard for high strength concrete silica was at 15000 psi set by silica induced concrete.

The addition of silica into concrete has revolutionised buildings as we knew it.
